Chapter 32

Thus grief still treads upon the heels of pleasure;

Married in haste, we may repent at leisure.

—William Congreve

I awoke with a start.

The sun was shining in through the bedroom window, and I heard voices downstairs. It was nearly eight o’clock, and I was late for work. I leaped out of bed, ran into the bathroom, and then realized it was Saturday. Thank God. I hastily put on jeans and a sweatshirt and went downstairs to find Elliott and Jodi at the breakfast table, drinking coffee. Hal was frying bacon with Killer lying at his feet. Geraldine was on Jodi’s lap. Spook was nowhere in sight.

“Did you guys spend the night here or what?” I demanded.

“And good morning to you, too, darling,” drawled Jodi.

I poured myself a cup of coffee and sat down at the table, rubbing my eyes. “I have a feeling of déjà vu,” I said. “Did last night really happen?”

“I’m afraid it did,” said Hal. “Do you think Natalie was telling the truth?”

Elliott laughed mirthlessly. “I’m sure she was. It’s too freakin’ bizarre not to be true. Nobody could make all that up.”

“Well, it fits with what we already know,” I said.

“And the district attorney would never believe it,” Elliott said. “He’d try to tear her apart. She’s fragile enough that he might be able to get her to say things that would incriminate you further.”

“Like what?” I demanded.

Elliott made an impatient gesture. “I don’t know like what. Like you making threats against her mother.”

“I never made any threats in her presence,” I protested, and then I remembered. “Except that I did tell her to stay out of my lab or the hospital wouldn’t be big enough for both of us, and I told Monty and Jack and Tyler that they would have to choose between Dr. Shore and me.”

Elliott got up and retrieved some papers from his attaché case. “I had one of my associates interview Bruce Montgomery, Charles Nelson, and four of the doctors. They pretty much backed up what you said. But Charlie Nelson did hear you make threats, and he told people about it. I’m afraid your assistant administrator is a bit of a gossip.”

I knew that. Our Charlie has a mouth like a sieve. It was stupid of me to say those things to him, of all people. They just came out, and there was no taking them back.

“So, to sum it all up, other members of your medical staff didn’t like her, but you were the only one whose job was threatened by her. Nobody else said they couldn’t work with her. Nobody else was worried about the lab. Nobody else threatened her. So your motive still stands out from everybody else’s. Fritz will have no reason not to jump on that and use it for all it’s worth, circumstantial as it is.”

“What about George Marshall?” I asked. “He was the one who mentioned all the malpractice suits we may be getting because of her. Somebody needs to talk to him.”

“We can do that, but Bruce Montgomery already addressed it.
